[ARCHIVED] Beware of scammers

Scam alert image

Phone and Internet scams have flourished. Here are some tips from USAA to avoid being a victim.

First, be aware of red flags that signal a scam. Scammers use emails, texts, phone calls and fake websites. To grab your attention, they can impersonate companies, officials and friends and family.

Next, the four preventive measures in STOP can be a first line of defense.

Stay Cautious: Always be alert when someone asks for information or money.

Take Your Time: Scammers want to rush you. Slow down and think before you act.

Only Trust Verified Sources: Double-check information through trusted channels you’ve independently verified.

Protect Your Information: Never share personal or financial details unless you’re sure who you’re dealing with.

Actions you can take to safeguard your information:

  1. Use fingerprint, facial or voice recognition to access banking apps.
  2. Create strong and unique passwords for each account.
  3. Set up two-factor authentication. That could include a code sent to your phone in addition to your password.
  4. Avoid using public WiFi to access banking apps or to shop online.
