Message from Mayor Kleem

Mayor Kleem

Berea has made great strides in the past year: infrastructure projects, new programs at the recreation center, a Safe Seniors program for our older residents. Plus we have some exciting plans for 2014. I’ll report on all of that during my annual State of the City address on Thursday, March 20.

Last month, members of my administration and I outlined our accomplishments in 2013 and our goals for this year at the Senior Luncheon. On March 20, I’ll speak to the Berea Chamber of Commerce at a breakfast at the Perk-cup! Café, 561 W. Bagley Road.

Some of the topics I’ll cover will include our road program. Last year, the City of Berea spent $900,000 on road and parking lot improvements. The largest project was the total replacement of roads, sewers and water lines in the Westbridge Drive neighborhood, costing $3 million. We also made improvement to the Berea Recreation Center and acquired vacant properties in the North End, which we can market to new businesses. With the help of the Cuyahoga County Land Bank, we acquired and razed a vacant home on Longfellow Drive, then built a new home on the property. That house is now for sale. The proceeds will be used to purchase another foreclosed and abandoned home in a continuing process to fight blight in our city.

Our most important job is safeguarding your tax dollars. Berea has done more with less tax revenue over the past six years. Despite a decline in the general fund, there have been no layoffs, no service reductions and no tax increases.

We work hard and smart.

For reservations to the State of City breakfast, contact the Berea Chamber of Commerce, (440) 243-8415 or e-mail chamber@bereaohio.com. The breakfast begins at 8 a.m. Cost is $20.

Sincerely,
