How can I become a Berea Police Officer or Berea Firefighter?

First, you will have to take the Police or Fire written Civil Service Entrance Exam that is given in the fall of even-numbered years. Next test date will be in 2012. 

When will the Civil Service written test application be available?

Beginning of July of the year the test is to be administered. 

Where do I turn in the application?

The application and fee must be time/date stamped in by the Berea Civil Service Secretary. Her office is located in the Berea Building Department, which is in the lower level of Berea City Hall.

Applicants may also submit copies of degrees, additional training and/or education and DD-214’s when turning in their application. 

Is there a cost to take the test?

Yes. The non-refundable written test fee is $25. 

Do I have to be a Berea resident?


Is there an age limit?


Are there any other requirements?

Applicants are required to submit their Physical Agility Certificate from Cuyahoga Community College by a date determined by the Civil Service Commission. 

Is extra credit given?

Any applicant who has attained a passing grade on the written exam and who has completed one (1) year or longer in the service of the Armed Forces of the United Sates of America and has been honorably discharged therefrom, shall be given a credit of two percent (2%) of the basic score attained on such entrance exam, the said credit to be added to the basic score in order to obtain the final grade. 

Can officers just transfer to Berea?

No. All candidates must take the written exam in order to be considered.

The Berea Civil Service Commission meets quarterly. Meetings are held in Council Chambers and are open to the public.
